Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction Shortlist Announcement
Writers’ Trust Announces Finalists for 15th Annual Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction
On September 10, Writers’ Trust of Canada announced the five finalists for the 2025 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction, which marks its 15th anniversary this year. The $75,000 prize and its companion prize, the Weston International Award, are supported by The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation through a multiyear funding commitment to elevate and embolden nonfiction writers both in Canada and abroad.
A jury composed of writers Matthew R. Morris (Ontario), Lorri Neilsen Glenn (Nova Scotia), and Niigaan Sinclair (Manitoba) selected this year’s award finalists from 101 titles representing 62 Canadian publishing imprints. Each finalist is awarded $5,000 for a total of $95,000 awarded annually. The winner will be revealed at the Writers’ Trust Awards on November 13 in Toronto.
“We’re proud to celebrate 15 years of elevating Canadian, fact-based writing—and to honour the legacy of The Honourable Hilary M. Weston—through this year’s Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Nonfiction Prize,” said David Leonard, executive director of Writers’ Trust of Canada. “These remarkable 2025 finalists showcase the power of Canadian nonfiction to speak urgently to our times, by offering personal and collective stories that confront upheaval and imagine hopeful ways forward.”
