Who we are
The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation was founded by Hilary and W. Galen Weston and is based in Toronto, Ontario. The Foundation began funding in 2020 and is dedicated to empowering people and communities whose bold ideas create a better world.
Yes, there are other foundations with connections to the Weston family.
The Weston Family Foundation was established in Canada in 1960 by W. Garfield Weston and his wife Reta Lila Weston. The Foundation invests in innovation and learning in health and landscapes to deliver measurable impacts to the well-being of Canadians.
The Galen and Hilary Weston Foundation is based in the UK and supports organizations in the UK and Ireland. The Foundation funds research and support that will transform the landscape of treatment and care for those affected by neurodegenerative diseases of ageing.
Funding
The Foundation’s funding priorities are guided by the vision and ambitions of our founders. The Foundation supports a range of causes, most notably arts and culture, education and empowerment, the environment, health, and humanitarian efforts.
The Foundation recognizes a significant amount of philanthropic funding is concentrated in Toronto and the surrounding Greater Toronto Area. In light of this and aligned with its founder's ambitions to support many Canadians, the Foundation endeavours to support great ideas and people throughout the country.
The Foundation’s application process is by invitation only, as the Foundation recognizes the tremendous effort it takes for organizations to engage with potential funders and prepare proposals. The Foundation will proactively reach out to organizations if there is an interest in funding their work. The Foundation will not respond to unsolicited proposals.
Granting decisions are informed by the priorities and values of the Foundation, and undergo rigorous review by an internal team, and in some cases subject matter experts, followed by a final decision by our Board of Directors.
The Foundation considers renewing funding to existing grantees on a case-by-case basis. However, grantees are encouraged to develop diversified revenue streams to support and sustain their work beyond the duration of the Foundation’s support. The Foundation is committed to supporting a range of organizations whose bold ideas empower people and communities and contribute to a better world, and as such, intentionally seeks to diversify its funding.
