As part of the largest humanitarian network in the world, the Canadian Red Cross supports communities in times of humanitarian crisis, making a profound difference across Canada and around the world. Since 2022, The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation’s support has enabled the Red Cross to reach more people with life-saving support at home in Canada and across the globe.

In Canada, the Red Cross plays a large role in supporting Canadians impacted by devastating wildfires. In 2025 alone, more than 7 million hectares were scorched by over 5,000 wildfires across Canada’s provinces and territories, with Manitoba and Saskatchewan among the hardest-hit provinces. The blazing fires displaced thousands and threatened entire communities.

Through this work, the Canadian Red Cross is working hand-in-hand with Indigenous leadership and all levels of government to support these impacted Canadians. With over 52,000 people registered for critical support, donors from across the country, including The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation, have enabled the Red Cross to offer assistance to those evacuated, including emergency accommodations, essential supplies such as food, blankets, pillows, and teddy bears, as well as ongoing mental health and wellbeing support; bringing relief and stability during moments of fear and uncertainty.

One of the people registered was Ron Radics of Flin Flon, Manitoba, who stayed at a congregate shelter in Winnipeg until it was safe for him to return home. “The Red Cross and everyone involved here has made us comfortable, and that’s the most important thing. We’re happy here because everybody’s looking after us,” said Ron. Apart from essentials like food, hygiene items and a safe place to sleep at night, Ron also got to meet members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who came to hand out food, t-shirts and spread some joy.

As communities move forward from crisis to recovery, the Red Cross’ collaboration with governments, community leadership and local partners is providing vital assistance — supporting households and communities as they navigate their recovery journey and through the months and years to come.

The Canadian Red Cross exemplifies a core value of the Canadian spirit and of The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation: ensuring support is provided to those who need it. By supporting those who are suffering, whether at home in Canada or in countries around the world, the Red Cross is contributing to making the world a better place for all.
